Cori Thomas’s raw, edgy and funny play about the many flavors of desire, When January Feels Like Summer, featuring Debargo Sanyal, Dion Graham, Mahira Kakkar, Maurice Williams and J. Mallory McCree, begins previews May 28 for its New York premiere in a co-production of Ensemble Studio Theatre and Page 73 Productions directed by Daniella Topol.

When January Feels Like Summer at the Ensemble Studio Theatre, 549 West 52nd Street, Wednesday, opens Thursday, June 5, at 7:00pm (for a run currently scheduled through June 22).

When January Feels Like Summer follows five diverse Central Harlem residents as they collide during one strangely warm winter, when a feeling of change hums in the air. Through everyday encounters on the subway and in corner bodegas a pair of teenagers becomes unexpected heroes, an immigrant accountant embraces transformation, and two lonely souls begin to stumble toward each other.

“Any and every New Yorker knows that living here means the strange, surprising, and sometimes magical exchange between strangers,” said Ms. Topol. “Our production will capture this energy as five racially and sexually diverse characters collide into and out of one another’s lives in comedic and moving ways.”

“We are thrilled to collaborate on the New York premiere of Cori Thomas, a playwright whose work both of our theaters have developed — and loved — for years,” said William Cardin, Artistic Director of Ensemble Studio Theatre and Asher Richelli and Liz Jones, Executive Directors of Page 73. “When January Feels Like Summer is a funny, magical and deeply affecting story about New York City today and people discovering themselves and each other in unexpected and surprising ways. We can’t wait to share it with our New York audiences.

Cori Thomas is a playwright and actress who lives in New York City. Her plays include: When January Feels Like Summer (World Premiere City Theatre Co., Pittsburgh); Pa’s Hat (Pillsbury House Theatre, MN); My Secret Language of Wishes (Various theaters and University productions including Mixed Blood, MN); The Princess, The Breast, and, The Lizard; The Unusual Love Life of Bedbugs and Other Creatures; Waking Up; His Daddy; our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor. Ms. Thomas’s plays have been developed and produced at Sundance Theatre Lab, Goodman Theatre, City Theatre Company (Pittsburgh), Page 73, Playwrights Horizons, Lark Play Development Center, The Ensemble Studio Theatre, Going To The River, Pillsbury House Theatre, Mixed Blood Theatre, Penumbra Theatre, Passage Theatre, The Playwrights Realm, New Federal Theatre, New Georges, The Black Rep (St. Louis), The New Black Fest, and Queens Theatre in the Park. She has been commissioned by South Coast Rep Theatre, EST/Sloan Foundation, NYSCA/Page 73, NYSCA/EST and Pillsbury House Theatre.

Sets are by Jason Simms, lights by Austin R. Smith, costumes by Sydney Maresca and sound by Shane Rettig. Eileen Lalley is production stage manager.

Through our unique collaborative process we develop and produce original, provocative, and authentic new plays that engage and challenge our audience and audiences across the country.

When January Feels Like Summer is the third production this season on the Ensemble Studio Theatre mainstage, following the extended run of their critically-acclaimed Year of the Rooster by Eric Dufault for which Bobby Moreno received a Drama Desk nomination, the critically-acclaimed Fast Company by Carla Ching.

Page 73 Productions, under the leadership of Executive Directors Liz Jones and Asher Richelli, Producing Director Michael Walkup, and Associate Director Rachel Karpf, produces and develops the work of early-career playwrights who have yet to receive a professional New York production. Page 73′s writers have gone on to win the Pulitzer Prize, the Drama Desk Award, the OBIE Award, the Lucille Lortel Award, and many more. Page 73′s world and New York premiere productions include the recent New York premiere of Grounded by George Brant; Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue by Quiara Alegría Hudes (2007 Pulitzer finalist); 1001 by Jason Grote; Sixty Miles to Silver Lake by Dan LeFranc (2010 New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award); Creature by Heidi Schreck; Jack’s Precious Moment by Samuel D. Hunter; Edgewise by Eliza Clark; Lidless by Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig; and Sleeping Rough by Kara Manning. Page 73′s slate of development programs includes the prestigious P73 Playwriting Fellowship, offering a $10,000 grant and a yearlong artistic home to one early-career writer, as well as the Interstate 73 writers group and an annual Summer Residency. Plays developed in these programs include the recent acclaimed world premieres of Meghan Kennedy’s Too Much, Too Much, Too Many at Roundabout Underground and Dorothy Fortenberry’s Partners at the 2014 Humana Festival of New American Plays.

When January Feels Like Summer is Page 73′s second production this season, following their critically-acclaimed Grounded by George Brant for which Hannah Cabell just received a Drama Desk nomination.

DeathMoney_comp-210

Crime Fiction novelist Henry Chang (Chinatown Beat, Year of the Dog, and Red Jade) is on a book tour for Death Money, the fourth novel in his popular noir series featuring Detective Jack Yu. On Sunday, May 18, 2014, the Asian American Resource Workshop (AARW) Writer’s Group is hosting at book reading and signing at the Chinese Progressive Association (CPA), 28 Ash Street in Boston, MA, from 6:30-8pm. Admission is free, books will be available for sale. Call 617-426-5313 for more information.

On Thursday, June 5, 2014, Chang, Elijah Kuan Wong and Paula Bomer will read from their novels at Project Reach Chinatown/LES, 39 Eldridge St. ( bet. Canal St. and Hester St.) 4th Floor in New York, from 7-9pm. Admission is free, books will be available for sale. Call 212-966-4227 for more information.

On Tuesday, June 17, 2014  Chang will be among 7 featured authors in the Mystery Writers America (MWA) series with Richie Narvaez hosting, at KGB Bar, 85 East 4th St. in New York. The evening begins at 6:30pm, Admission is free, books will be available for sale. Call 212-505-3360 for more information.

Chang previews Detective Yu’s latest investigation which takes him through a criminal underworld that reaches from benevolent associations of Chinatown to the take-out restaurants, strip clubs, and underground gambling establishments of the Bronx, to a wealthy, exclusive New Jersey borough. It’s an intrigue worthy of a classic Hong Kong crime thriller right here in the New York City area… More than just a crime story, the novel is a revealing look into Chinese communities through a character who is conflicted about his return to Chinatown. Mystery genre review site reviewingtheevidence.com says, “In his dogged insistence on providing the Chinese word for the Chinese thing, Henry Chang may very well be insisting on the complex reality that lies behind the often tacky face that Chinatown shows to the North American eye.”

Henry Chang is a New Yorker, a native son of Chinatown and the Lower East Side. His poems have appeared in the seminal Yellow Pearl anthology, and in Gangs In New York’s Chinatown. He has written for Bridge Magazine, and his fiction has appeared in On A Bed Of Rice and in the NuyorAsian Anthology. His debut novel Chinatown Beat garnered high praise from the New York Times Book Review, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, among others.

My cousin Mya Lagandaon, age 10, will star as Ariel in Linda Bulgo’s Musical Productions’ Spring 2014 Production of Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID JR., May 31 – June 2, 2014, at Scottish Rite Center, 2850 19th Ave. (at Sloat Blvd.) in San Francisco, CA 94132.

In a magical kingdom fathoms below, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince Prince Eric that she’s the girl with the enchanting voice. Adapted from Disney’s 2008 Broadway production, Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID JR. features the hit songs “Part of Your World,” “She’s in Love,” and the Oscar-winning “Under the Sea.”

Two years ago, I was wowed by the budding musical theater star’s performance as Gertrude McFuzz in Seussical, The Musical.

The fifth grader is a performer for the San Francisco Arts Education Project (SFartsEd), which provides arts programs to different elementary and middle schools in the City. She has been taking Linda Bulgo’s Musical Productions Performance Workshop weekly class for 3 years. www.lindabulgosmusicalproductions.com

Crime Fiction novelist Henry Chang (Chinatown Beat, Year of the Dog, and Red Jade) is on a book tour for Death Money, the fourth novel in his popular noir series featuring Detective Jack Yu.

Annette O’Toole leads the cast of Wendy Wasserstein’s Third at Two River Theater Company, helmed Michael Cumpsty, May 31 through June 22, 2014. First produced at the Lincoln Center Theater in 2005, the play is set at an elite, New England liberal arts college in November 2002 and focuses on college professor Laurie Jameson (played by Annette O’Toole), who accuses one of her students—an outwardly preppy jock nicknamed ‘Third’ (Christopher Sears) — of plagiarism, and upends her own life in the process. The cast also features Amy Hohn (Nancy), J.R. Horne (Jack Jameson), and Emily Walton (Emily Jameson). Performances are at Two River’s Rechnitz Theater, 21 Bridge Avenue, Red Bank, N.J.

Michael Cumpsty directs, and Annette O’Toole stars in Wendy Wasserstein's Third.

Michael Cumpsty directs, and Annette O’Toole stars in Wendy Wasserstein’s Third.

Third is a moving, dazzlingly smart and funny play that explores such quintessential Wasserstein themes as the challenges confronting Laurie Jameson and her generation; friendship and rivalry between women; the complexities of family; and the dangers of identity politics and class distinctions.

Wendy Wasserstein was the first woman to win the Tony Award for Best Play, for The Heidi Chronicles (the second play produced by Two River Theater in its 1994/95 debut season at Monmouth University), for which she also received the 1989 Pulitzer Prize. In addition, The Heidi Chronicles won the 1989 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and New York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards. Wasserstein’s other plays include Uncommon Women and Others, Isn’t It Romantic, The Sisters Rosensweig, An American Daughter, and Old Money. Among other works, she wrote several collections of essays; a children’s book, Pamela’s First Musical; and screenplays, including The Object of My Affection. Wasserstein was educated at Mounty Holyoke College and the Yale School of Drama. She died on January 30, 2006 at the age of 55, after a bout with lymphoma.

Director Michael Cumpsty is an Obie-winning and Tony Award-nominated actor. His credits include, most recently, Machinal, The Winslow Boy, and The End of the Rainbow, as well as an additional 14 Broadway productions. At Two River Theater, he has performed in Present Laughter and Much Ado About Nothing. He received an Obie Award for his performance as Hamlet at Classic Stage Company, where he starred in many other Shakespeare productions including Richard III, which he co-directed.

Amy Hohn has appeared on Broadway in November and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Her television credits include “Person of Interest,” “Elementary,” and “The Good Wife”.

J.R. Horne starred as Grandpa in You Can’t Take It with You, the inaugural production of Two River’s Rechnitz Theater in 2005. His other credits in a career spanning more than 50 years include A Time to Kill and The Crucible on Broadway.

Annette O’Toole’s Off-Broadway and regional theater credits include Southern Comfort for Barrington Stage Company & CAP21, Kindness at Playwrights Horizons, and The Seagull for Classic Stage Company. On television, she starred as Martha Kent in “Smallville” and received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her work in “The Kennedys of Massachusetts”. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Song with Michael McKean for “A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow” from the film A Mighty Wind.

Christopher Sears most recently appeared Off-Broadway in London Wall. His television credits include “The Michael J. Fox Show” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”.

The Skivvies

Award-winning singer-actors Lauren Molina (Marry Me a Little, Sweeney Todd, Rock of Ages) and Nick Cearley (All Shook Up) became YouTube sensations as The Skivvies, a “musically thrilling” undie-rock, comedy-pop duo who don’t just strip down their musical arrangements, they literally strip down to their underwear to perform their distinctive mashups and eccentric originals for cello and ukulele, with touches of glockenspiel, melodica, and a surprising array of under-used instruments.

Clips of the pair’s living room videos, which displayed their powerful harmonies as well as their powerful abs, led to live shows that The Wall Street Journal called “smart, sophisticated…ingenious,” and Out Magazine, “The Skivvies have managed to carve out a niche that we never knew needed to exist: part Weird Al- parody and part sexy burlesque…and unusual explosion of satire and sultry.” They also have a single and music video directed by Augusten Burroughs, bestselling author of Running With Scissors.

Tony Award–winner  BD Wong comes home to San Francisco to make his American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) debut in the U.S. premiere of James Fenton’s acclaimed adaptation of The Orphan of Zhao, a classic Chinese legend that has its roots in the fourth century BCEat A.C.T.’s Geary Theater (415 Geary Street, San Francisco) June 4–29, 2014. Press night is Wednesday, June 11, 2014. Tickets ($20–$120) are on sale now and may be purchased online at act-sf.org or by calling 415.749.2228.

Helmed by A.C.T.’s artistic director Carey Perloff, The Orphan of Zhao is an epic story of self-sacrifice and revenge. In the aftermath of a political coup, a country doctor is forced to sacrifice his own son in order to save the last heir of a noble and massacred clan. Often described as the Chinese Hamlet, this enduring tale was the first Chinese play to be translated in the West nearly 300 years ago and has inspired countless operas, plays, and movies. The Guardian praised Fenton’s adaptation as “haunting . . . [a] drama hewn out of a myth that speaks across the centuries,” and The Times of London called it “an emotionally piercing marvel.”

Says Perloff: “Discovering The Orphan of Zhao was incredibly eye-opening for me, an insight into a vivid moment in Chinese culture and an introduction to a major classic of suspense and sacrifice rarely seen in the Western theater. The Zhao story has been told in China for a millennium, most recently in a vivid Chinese film called Sacrifice. Its arrival on the Geary stage, starring BD Wong, continues our exploration of Chinese culture with a remarkable company of Asian American actors and theater artists, including Stuck Elevator composer Byron Au Yong who is composing the many songs and live musical interludes in the production. We hope our audiences will be as transported and surprised by this stunning piece of world theater as we were when we first encountered it.”

The cast for The Orphan of Zhao includes Marie-France Arcilla (Stuck Elevator at A.C.T.; Working at Prospect Theater Company), Stan Egi (Golden Child off Broadway), Philip Estrera (third-year A.C.T. Master of Fine Arts student; A Christmas Carol at A.C.T.), Nick Gabriel (A.C.T. Resident Artist; Napoli! at A.C.T.), Cindy Im (Stuck Elevator and 4000 Miles at A.C.T.; The Snow Queen at San Jose Repertory Theatre), Orville Mendoza (Peter and the Starcatcher on Broadway; Miss Saigon National tour), Paolo Montalban (Pacific Overtures and The King and I on Broadway), Brian Rivera (Yellowjackets at Berkeley Repertory Theatre; Macbeth at Sacramento Shakespeare Festival), Sab Shimono (Pacific Overtures on Broadway; original cast member of Mame on Broadway), Julyana Soelistyo (Tony Award–nominee for Golden Child on Broadway), Daisuke Tsuji (King Lear at Oregon Shakespeare Festival; Dralion by Cirque du Soleil), and BD Wong (M. Butterfly; Law & Order: Special Victims Unit).

BD Wong received the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Theater World, Clarence Derwent, and Tony Awards for his Broadway debut in M. Butterfly-an unprecedented achievement. His television credits include “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “All-American Girl,” “Oz,” “And the Band Played On,” and “Awake”. On film, Wong can be seen in Jurassic Park, The Freshman, Father of the Bride, Seven Years in Tibet, Executive Decision, The Salton Sea, Stay, and Mulan. On Broadway, Wong has performed in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Pacific Overtures. Regional theater credits include, Herringbone (Williamstown Theatre Festival, McCarter Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse). Upcoming projects include Focus (Warner Bros.), “The Normal Heart” (HBO), and Jurassic World (Universal). He is also the author of the critically acclaimed memoir “Following Foo…” (Harper Entertainment). Wong is a San Francisco native.

Carey Perloff is celebrating her 21st year as artistic director of A.C.T., and is known for championing innovative productions of classics and new writing for the theater. Perloff has directed a wide range of work at A.C.T., most recently including Elektra, Endgame and Play, Scorched, The Homecoming, Tosca Cafe (cocreated with Val Caniparoli and recently toured Canada), A.C.T.-commissioned translations/adaptations of Hecuba, The Misanthrope, and her own play The Colossus of Rhodes (Susan Smith Blackburn Award finalist). Her latest play, Higher, won the 2011 Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation Theatre Visions Fund Award and received its world premiere in 2012. Before joining A.C.T., Perloff was artistic director of Classic Stage Company in New York, which won numerous OBIE awards under her leadership. A recipient of the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the National Corporate Theatre Fund’s 2007 Artistic Achievement Award, Perloff received a B.A. Phi Beta Kappa in classics and comparative literature from Stanford University and was a Fulbright Fellow at Oxford. She will provide oversight and input throughout the project, disseminate the research findings to the theater community at large, organize the final convening, and formulate and oversee implementation for any next steps identified by the research.

The creative team for The Orphan of Zhao includes scenic designer Daniel Ostling (Major Barbara and Stuck Elevator at A.C.T.), costume designer Linda Cho (2014 Tony Award nominee for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder; Two Gentlemen of Verona at The Old Globe), lighting designer Lap Chi Chu (Romeo and Juliet at California Shakespeare Theater; Other Desert Cities at the Mark Taper Forum), sound designer Jake Rodriguez (Rock ‘N’ Roll and Blackbird at A.C.T.), composer Byron Au Yong (Stuck Elevator at A.C.T.), with movement by Stephen Buescher (Head of Movement and Physical Theater at A.C.T.’s M.F.A. The creative team includes Wilson Chin (Scenic Design), Katherine Roth (Costume Design), Stephen Strawbridge(Lighting Design), Acme Sound Partners with Jason Crystal (Sound Design), Curtis Moore (Original Music), Ryan Nestor (Music Director), Jacob Grigolia-Rosenbaum (Fight Director), Ursula Meyer (Voice and Text Coach), Tara Rubin Casting (Casting), and Leila Knox (Stage Manager).

Two-time Golden Globe Award nominee Underwood most recently made his acclaimed Broadway debut in the iconic role of Stanley in Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire and garnered rave reviews opposite Cicely Tyson in Lifetime’s The Trip to Bountiful Also making their Globe debuts are Emmy Award winner Thomas (“The Americans,” “The Waltons”) and Connolly (“House of Cards,” The Cabin in the Woods). No stranger to the Bard, Underwood starred in Measure for Measurefor the 1993 summer season at the New York Shakespeare Festival (aka Shakespeare in the Park). Thomas and Connolly continue collaborations with Edelstein that began in New York: Thomas starred in Edelstein’s critically acclaimed production of Timon of Athens at The Public Theater in 2011, and Connolly in three Shakespeare plays that Edelstein helped produce at The Public. All three actors are making their Old Globe debuts.

From New York’s Shakespeare in the Park to Balboa Park, Artistic Director Barry Edelstein makes his outdoor directorial debut in The Old Globe’s Lowell Davies Festival Theatre with one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies. Despite the prejudices in Venice, the brilliant general Othello excels both on the battlefield and in the halls of state. But when he marries Desdemona, his envious lieutenant Iago sets in motion a diabolical plan to destroy him. Edelstein gives us a riveting, intense, and intimate production where poetry soars and swords clash, where true love and wrenching jealousy collide.

“The gifted actors who have assembled for Othello this summer make the case for the Globe’s preeminence among American Shakespeare theatres,” said Edelstein. “This talented company, led by Blair Underwood, Richard Thomas, and Kristen Connolly, grace our stage with their skills and imagination, and it’s my honor both to direct them and also to welcome them to San Diego.”

Statement released by Yuri and Bill Kochiyama’s family:

Life-long activist Yuri Kochiyama passed away peacefully in her sleep in Berkeley, California on the morning of Sunday, June 1 at the age of 93. Over a span of more than 50 years, Yuri worked tirelessly for social and political change through her activism in support of social justice and civil and human rights movements.

Yuri was born on May 19, 1921 in San Pedro, California and spent two years in a concentration camp in Jerome, Arkansas during World War II. After the war, she moved to New York City and married Bill Kochiyama, a decorated veteran of the all-Japanese American 442nd combat unit of the U.S. Army.

Yuri’s activism started in Harlem in the early 1960′s, where she participated in the Harlem Freedom Schools, and later, the African American, Asian American and Third World movements for civil and human rights and in the opposition against the Vietnam War. In 1963, she met Malcolm X. Their friendship and political alliance radically changed her life and perspective. She joined his group, the Organization of Afro-American Unity, to work for racial justice and human rights. Over the course of her life, Yuri was actively involved in various movements for ethnic studies, redress and reparations for Japanese Americans, African Americans and Native Americans, political prisoners’ rights, Puerto Rican independence and many other struggles.

Yuri is survived by her living children—Audee, Eddie, Jimmy and Tommy, grandchildren—Zulu, Akemi, Herb, Ryan, Traci, Maya, Aliya, Christopher, and Kahlil and great-grandchildren—Kai, Leilani, Kenji, Malia and Julia.

Yuri Kochiyama: Passion for Justice (1994), a film by Pat Saunders and Rea Tajiri, chronicles her remarkable contribution to social change through some of the most significant events of the 20th century, including the Black Liberation movement, the struggle for Puerto Rican independence, and the Japanese American Redress movement.

Yuri appeared as herself in the TV movie, “Death of a Prophet — The Last Days of Malcolm X” (1981); in the 12 award winning documentary, All Power to the People! (1996), by Chinese-Jamaican-American filmmaker Lee Lew-Lee for ZDF-Arte, broadcast in 21 nations and the U.S. between 1996-2001; is the subject of a documentary film with Angela Davis called Mountains That Take Wing (2010) by C.A. Griffith & L.T. Quan; and is the subject of a Tim Toyama’s play, Yuri and Malcolm X.

She and her husband, Bill Kochiyama, were featured in My America…or Honk if You Love Buddha (1997), the documentary by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Renee Tajima-Peña.

Yuri’s speeches were published in Discover Your Mission: Selected Speeches & Writings of Yuri Kochiyama (1998), by Russell Muranaka, and she wrote Passing It On: A Memoir (2004).

In 2005, Kochiyama was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize through the “1,000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005” project.

Jun. 4: Meet Forbidden City, USA’s Author and Filmmaker Arthur Dong in L.A. Chinatown

FC Book front coverlr

Chinese Historical Society of Southern California is presenting a book talk and signing with award-winning writer/filmmaker Arthur Dong, who will introduce his new book, Forbidden City, USA, on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 7 p.m., in LA Chinatown at Castelar Elementary School, 840 Yale St., Los Angeles 90012. (Free Parking – enter schoolyard lot via College Street)

Event Special: Free DVD with each book sale. Refreshments will be served.

Forbidden City, USA captures the magic and glamour of the Chinese American nightclub scene, which peaked in San Francisco during World War II. Previously unpublished personal stories, along with over four hundred stunning images and rare artifacts, are presented in this sexy and insightful chronicle of Asian American performers who defied racial and cultural barriers to pursue their showbiz dreams.

It was the mid-1930s: Prohibition was repealed and the Great Depression was waning. With a global conflict on the rise, people were out to drink, dine, dance, and see a show to forget their woes—and what a surprise for the world to behold an emerging generation of Chinese American entertainers commanding the stage in their own nightclubs. Forbidden City, USA reveals the sassy, daring, and sometimes heartbreaking memories of the dancers, singers, and producers who lived this story, and it weaves in a fascinating collection of photos, postcards, menus, programs, and yes, even souvenir chopsticks. Together they recreate a forgotten era, treating readers to a dazzling night on the town.

Forbidden City, USA is the culmination of filmmaker and writer Arthur Dong’s nearly thirty-year devotion to the topic, originally inspired by the author’s research for his documentary of the same name.

1235206_581254151937422_1785562783_nThe all-new dark comedy web series “it could be worse,” co-created and written by longtime collaborators Mitchell Jarvis and Wesley Taylor of four a.m. Productions, has been acquired by PIVOT TV and HULU. Pivot will premiere Season One of the gay web series about the perils of acting and risky relationships which originally debuted in February 2013 at www.itcouldbeworse.tv, on their cable network (check your local listings) on Sunday, June 8th at 11pm EST (post-Tony awards), and both seasons will air on Hulu’s free site in July!

In “it could be worse,” Wesley Taylor stars as Jacob Gordon, a struggling New York actor who can’t seem to catch a break. Victimized by the grueling rejections of an ugly business, his horny parents exploring their mid-life crisis, and a delusional boyfriend who needs constant babysitting, Jacob is lost.

He tries to be “good” and not give in to temptations. He tries to be “open” and have an understanding of the people around him… but at the end of the day, Jacob Gordon is a doormat.

His epic streak of bad luck might just change, however, when he gets cast in the new Broadway musical “The Ice Queen” — playing opposite stage and screen royalty Veronica Bailey (Alison Fraser), a temperamental diva who takes a liking to him.

“it could be worse” features Adam Chanler-Berat (Peter and the Starcatcher, Next to Normal) as Jacob’s old fling Ben Farrel, Alison Fraser (Gypsy, The Secret Garden) as Veronica Bailey, Gideon Glick (Spring Awakening, Spider-Man) as Jacob’s boyfriend Phillip Klein, Mitchell Jarvis as Jacob’s coke-addicted agent Sam Atkinson, Tony Award nominee Nancy Opel (Urinetown, Memphis) as Jacob’s mother Judy Gordon and Richard Poe (Nice Work…, Present Laughter) as Jacob’s father Leo Gordon.

The series features original music by Lauren Molina and Scott Bradlee.

On Founder’s Day, Dr. Barbara Ann Teer’s National Black Theatre’s (NBT) will host the TEER Spirit Awards Gala to celebrate nine remarkable people in its community: Susan L. Taylor, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Sonia Sanchez, Keith Josef Adkins, Pastor Michael A. Walrond, Rev. Dr. Iris J. Banister, Marjorie Moon, James Haughton, and William L. Strickland. The gala takes place at National Black Theatre, 2031 Fifth Avenue in New York, on Wednesday, June 18, 2013 at 6:00PM. The event is being co-hosted by Johnnie Mae Allen & Thaddeus Daniels. Mr. Bert Price, musical director of NBT’s House Band, will provide live entertainment with Carol Maillard of Sweet Honey In the Rock, a theatrical excerpt from Facing Our Truth featuring C. Kelly Wright, and a dance tribute performance by Dyane Harvey. Honorary co-chairs are Phylicia Rashad, Sherry B. Bronfman, Michele Shay, Soffiyah Elijah and Kevin Powell.

The TEER Spirit Awards were inaugurated in 2008 after the passing of the founder of the National Black Theatre, Dr. Barbara Ann Teer. The awards were created in honor and recognition of the contribution of three leaders and pioneers within National Black Theatre’s history: Dr. Barbara Ann Teer [Susan L. Taylor, recipient] who founded the National Black Theatre in 1968 and whose vision is the foundation on which National Black Theatre stands, Adetunde Samuel [Marjorie Moon and Ruben Santiago-Hudson, recipients], a charismatic producer that headed NBT’s award winning Theatre Arts Program, and Fredrica L. Teer [Pastor Michael A. Walrond and Rev. Dr. Iris J. Banister, recipients] who as an institution builder conceived and organized the foundation that made the idea of National Black Theatre a reality. Outside of these awards, National Black Theatre honors Pioneers Sonia Sanchez, James Haughton and William Strickland in the field of Culture, Art and History. And for the first time this year, will give the Trailblazer Award to Keith Josef Adkins, a visionary and catalyst creating new possibilities for artistic expression.

June 18th is the birth date of Dr. Barbara Ann Teer and is called Founder’s Day. The event also begins the celebration of National Black Theatre’s 46th year of serving the community. Admission for the award ceremony is $150 per person and $1,500 for a table of 10 people, and includes a cocktail reception, silent auction, banquet dinner and a musically charged evening inside NBT’s historical landmark home on Fifth Avenue.

Tickets are on sale now. To charge by phone, or for additional information on the Fifth Annual TEER Spirit Awards, call 212-722-3800 or visit www.nationalblacktheatre.org. Seating is limited.

Second Generation Productions (2g), a pioneering incubator and producer of Asian American theater, is launching the Second Stage Residency Series at Second Stage Uptown (Christopher Burney, Curator) with readings of 2g’s commissions by Anna Moench and Sung Rno & Aaron Jones on June 9 & 16 at 7:00pm, Second Stage Uptown – McGinn Cazale Theater – 2162 Broadway at 76th Street in New York.

The Second Stage Residency Series at Second Stage Uptown has been created to support the rich diversity of New York City’s emerging theatrical companies and provide them with a platform to bring their work to new audiences. “Victor Maog is a former Van Lier Directing Fellow at Second Stage Theatre, and it is a natural fit to start this series with 2g,” said Christopher Burney, Curator of Second Stage Uptown. “I look forward to many summers showcasing the work of New York’s most adventurous young companies and introducing wider audiences to these inventive artists.”

2g Artistic Director Victor Maog states, “Second Stage Theatre, Artistic Director Carole Rothman, and Curator Chris Burney gave birth to my NYC directing career and this is just another example of their advocacy for excellence and inclusion in the city. We’re honored to be the inaugural company to help expand the scope of what stories can be told on a major stage.”

Monday, June 9th at 7pm

It’s summer in the suburbs, and Wendy’s father, Han, is arriving on a flight from China. After 40 years of no contact, they have a lot of catching up to do–Wendy has a happy family, a lovely home, and is living the American Dream. But when he arrives, everyone quickly realizes that picking up where they left off won’t be easy. A multigenerational drama about the complexities of the Asian American experience. The reading of Three Kingdoms features Jennifer Lim, Grant Shaud, Les Mau, Wai Ching Ho, Kailey Bray, Jeffrey Omura, and Nick Lehane.

Galois

Monday, June 16th at 7pm

A rock-mathematical-musical expression of the chaotic, brilliant, and all too brief life of Evariste Galois, who discovered a branch of mathematics as a precocious teenager, yet died in 1830′s revolutionary Paris at 21 in a duel over a woman’s love.
